If you're installing a lever handle, rotate the outside handle to the left or right according to your door handedness before moving on. Assemble the spindle and spring, then insert them through the outside of the door as shown in the "Assembly view" (fig. 1). Place the new handle onto the outside of the door.

Check the fit before installing a new door, and enlarge the opening as necessary. Once you are satisfied with the fit of the door, remove it and apply several thick beads of silicone caulk to the bottom of the doorsill. Caulk underneath the spots where the bottom of the jamb and brick moulding will be.
The location of knobs and pulls isn't written in stone, but there are some standard practices. One good rule of thumb is to line up a knob with the top of the bottom door rail. If you're installing door pulls, line up the bottom of the pull with the top of the door rail. Always center them on the door stile.
